OILY Dandruff vs. DRY Dandruff: Causes, Differences, Symptoms Photos, and Treatments

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff flakes are a result of the natural shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. Excessive clumping and flaking happen when the scalp becomes either too dry or overly oily. The severity of dandruff increases with the rapidity of dead skin cell shedding.

There are 2 types of Dandruff: Dry dandruff and Oily dandruff

Dandruff, a widespread scalp condition, comes in two varieties: “OILY dandruff” and “DRY dandruff”. Without proper treatment, symptoms can worsen significantly. It’s imperative to tackle this issue with suitable methods.

Oily Dandruff: Overly Oily Scalp with Dandruff

Oily dandruff is mainly caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia due to excess oil secretion from the sebaceous glands, resulting in it can stimulate the scalp, leading to the occurrence of dandruff.
Note: Malassezia is a fungus that usually lives on healthy adult scalps without issues, but overgrowth can cause dandruff.

Oily Dandruff: Symptoms
  • The scalp is oily and itchy
  • The flakes are sticky
  • The flakes are larger in size
  • The flakes can be either yellow or white in color.

Dry dandruff: Dehydrated & Dry Scalp with Dandruff

Dry dandruff occurs when the scalp lacks natural sebum protection, causing the moisture on the scalp to dry out, crack, and shed as tiny flakes. Regularly moisturizing the scalp is the most efficient solution for treating dry scalp.

Dry Dandruff: Symptoms
  • Your scalp is dry and Itchy
  • The flakes are dry
  • The flakes are smaller in size

Quick reminder
Beware of products that claim to treat dandruff or control oil but contain Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a surfactant that not only removes dirt but also strips away the natural moisturizers on your scalp. Consequently, your scalp may produce even more oil to protect itself, resulting in greasiness. Choose wisely to maintain a healthy balance.
